Chocolate Roses?

Does brown mean "you're tasty"?
Does brown mean "you're tasty"?
Who knew you could have brown roses before they're dead? I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise that these Terra Nostra "chocolate" roses aren't a natural occurrence but naturally the craft of rose breeders NIRP International. Still pretty nifty, if you ask me. Put these in a bouquet with some pastel blue roses and I'll agree to any proposal.

Found here.

Designer Chocolates

When I woke up this morning, I thought, "I wonder if there's such a thing as designer donuts?"

Well, I didn't find any. I did find some seriously hip chocolates, though.

Lord, forgive them their bad puns.
Lord, forgive them their bad puns.

Look at that. Don't you just wanna steal that and turn it in for your final project in Graphic Design 101?

And they must be hip. For a stylish $65, you can buy yourself a 48-piece set. Plunk down a mere $350 and this gift set, complete with handbag, is yours (or hers):

What will happen if I leave them in the purse on a hot day?
What will happen if I leave them in the purse on a hot day?

Check them out at the Chocolate Bar here. I've never tried their goods, so I don't know if it's worth the price. I may have to splurge and order a smaller box just to see. Retro Bar, anyone?

Looking for budget-friendly chocolate pretties? Try Target's Choxie. I'm sure choco buffs would sneer, but I kinda like the stuff. That may just be the package designer within me that never quite went away.

Not just straight lines

Bad table. Bad!
Bad table. Bad!
Grownup furniture suddenly seems dead next to the lively creations by the wittily-named Straight Line Designs. Sure, I'm a little old for a castle bed (or am I?), but I'd totally mow the lawn for weeks for a melting cabinet or a sagging accordian table.

Ditch the boring black bag.

Not boring.
Not boring.
Where Janine King gets her gorgeous fabric selections, I'd like to know. But since I can barely sew, anyway, I'm content to purchase these fabrics in the form of an object. I've got one of King's laptop cases (in the fabric pictured above), and it's as functional as it is attractive. This is perfect for my sense of individuality when I go places with my laptop, which is, like, never. It does look nice propped up against my wall over here, though. It also matches my wenge brown Vaio, and that's what's important (you hear me, Sony?).

"Are you my mommy?"
Rust Boy by Brian Taylor is an old favorite of mine - possibly yours, too. There's not much I can say about this unfinished gem. The tears-inducing artwork is something you just have to experience.

Need a F**king Coffee

I know the feeling, sister.
I know the feeling, sister.
Don't you wish there were a more elegant way to spew the vitriol of your cranky soul? Locher's has found it. Each of their blouses feature such delicate phrases as "Good Luck, Motherf***er" (sans censoring, of course), "I like it rough," and "I really need a f**king coffee" (pictured above), rendered in dainty embroidery and beset with little flowery bits on 1940s-inspired designs.

I'm not sure I have the guts (or the budget - you're looking at around $75-80 each) to wear much of Locher's fare in public, but I may have to work on that.

Art Deco Envelope Bar

Art Deco Envelope Bar
Art Deco Envelope Bar
There's nothing I love more than art deco (until my next post), and this folding bar at the Art Deco Collection is worthy of the label.

Check out the details on this baby:

Bar2Bar3

If I lived in the Bay Area and had some extra lunch money, I'd probably see about procuring this for myself. I'd find a reason to justify it. Somehow.

More about the above and other deco goodies here.

Hot Chocolate

"I believe in miracllllles..."

I found a recipe for hot spicy chocolate that's really something. I'm not a chocoholic by any definition, but this?  Seriously good stuff.

As pictured above, I added an extra pinch of cayenne (you read that right) and cinnamon to mine because I like my spices best when in need of a fire extinguisher, but the base recipe's fine as is. And you can get that recipe here.

It's a brown blog.

I'm a graphic designer and a girly-girl in denial. My weakness? The color brown. Wait, it gets worse. Brown with pastels.

And that's primarily what this blog is about. It's my appreciation - as a designer and as a chick - for all things brown. Brown and pink. Brown and powder blue. Brown and brown. Whatever. If it's brown, it's here. With exceptions, of course, because I'm a lady. (Oh, come on. Like you weren't thinking it, too. Well, anyway, you're thinking it now.)

Have you seen something eye-catching that would be suitable? Send it to me at brownjournal@crookedsixpence.com, and if I like it, I'll post it.
